How to Tune a Short Reed Goose Call | Holler Back Calls

If your goose call has started fighting you — sticking on certain notes, losing its crisp sound, or just taking way more air than it used to — the good news is it's probably not broken. It's out of tune. And most of the time, that's a five-minute fix once you know what you're looking at.
Here's how to tune a short reed goose call the way we do it on the bench, step by step.
How do you know your call needs tuning?
A few signs it's time to pop the call open:
- You're working harder than you used to. If a call that used to be easy is suddenly taking a lot of air, something's shifted.
- The high end won't break, or won't stop breaking. Notes either won't roll over into the high register, or they break too easily when you don't want them to.
- It sounds airy, thin, or buzzy. A clean call should sound full and raspy, not weak or scratchy.
- It got dropped, soaked, or sat in a hot truck all summer. Acrylic and reed material both react to temperature and impact more than people expect.
If any of that sounds familiar, the call almost always still has good tone left in it — it just needs the tip gap, the reed, or the wedge adjusted.
What you're actually adjusting
A short reed call has a few parts that all work together, and tuning is just bringing them back into balance:
- The reed — stamped from mylar, it's the thin strip that vibrates to make sound. Reeds can crack, bubble, or shift out of position over time.
- The wedge — holds the reed against the tone board. How far in or out it sits changes how much of the reed can vibrate, which in turn changes the tone of the call. The more reed that shows, the deeper the call will be.
- The reed tip gap — the space between the reed and the tip of the tone board. Too tight, and the reed won't have room to fall into the tone channel. Too loose, and you'll take a full chest of air for one cluck.
- The o-rings — hold the insert and barrel together. If either is worn out or missing, you stand a good chance of losing your insert altogether.
You're not trying to redesign the call. You're nudging these back to where they were when it sounded right.
Tuning a short reed goose call, step by step
1. Take the insert out and look at the guts. Examine them for dirt and grime. If they're dirty, soak them in soapy water and rinse clean. Check the reed for cracks, unwanted bends, or bubbles — if it's physically damaged, no amount of tuning will fix it, and it's time for a replacement reed rather than an adjustment.
2. Check the reed tip gap. Press down lightly on the face of the reed where it sits over the tone board. There should be a small, even gap — you may not even see it, but you'll be able to feel if the reed is hitting the tone board wall. Get it as tight as possible without touching; this will reduce the amount of air needed.
3. Adjust the wedge to set the preferred tone. Most short reed calls let you move the wedge in or out slightly to open up or restrict how freely the reed moves.
- Too high pitch, or breaks over too easily? Push the wedge in slightly. This allows more of the reed to break over, lowering the tone.
- Airy, or takes too much air to break over? Push the tone board in slightly to reduce how much of the reed is showing. This raises the tone, but can also clean up your notes if there's too much vibration.
Make small moves. A sixteenth of an inch is a big adjustment on most calls — go too far and you'll overcorrect right past where you wanted to land.
4. Test after every adjustment. Put the insert back in and blow a few notes — a low moan, a cluck, and try to break it into the high end. Don't make a second adjustment until you've actually tested the first one. Tuning by feel without testing is how a good call gets tuned wrong twice.
5. Check the o-rings last. The o-rings don't affect the sound — instead, they hold your insert in place. If they get worn out or disappear, your insert might too.
Common mistakes that make it worse
- Adjusting more than one thing at once. Change one thing, test it, then move on. Adjusting the wedge and the tone board at the same time makes it impossible to know what actually fixed — or broke — the sound.
- Forcing a cracked reed to work. A damaged reed can sometimes still make a sound, just not a good one. If you see a crack, replace it — don't keep tuning around it.
- Over-tightening the guts. If your guts are assembled into the insert so tight that you can't spin them back out, you may actually be locking the reed down with the wedge. This is the most critical tolerance in any guts-and-insert assembly. Go too loose, and the guts can actually blow out the bottom of the insert. All of our guts are sanded for a perfect fit, but sometimes a wedge needs a little fine tuning of its own to hit the sweet spot you want. Just be careful — take off too much, and that wedge is shot.

What's the difference between tuning and replacing a reed? Tuning adjusts the position of a healthy reed. If the reed itself is cracked, badly bubbled, or bent, no adjustment will fix it — that's a replacement, not a tuning .
What is reed bubbling? Bubbling happens when the mylar reed gets exposed to too much heat — think a hot truck dashboard or direct sun — and the layers of plastic that make up the material start to separate. Think of mylar like an onion, built from thin layers pressed together; when those layers come apart, you get a raised spot that looks like a bubble in the reed. P.S. — not every bubble means an instant reed replacement. Sometimes a bubble has no real effect on how the call actually sounds.
